Der immergrüne Strauch mit stark buschigem Wuchs erreicht Wuchshöhen von 30 bis 130 cm. Die kräftigen Äste und Zweige sind reich verzweigt. Junge Triebe sind rotbraun beschuppt. Äste und Zweige sind grau berindet.

Die wechselständig angeordneten Blätter treten an den Zweigenden gehäuft auf und werden zwischen einem und zwei Zentimeter lang, sowie bis einen Zentimeter breit. Ihre Form ist meist lanzettlich bis schmal-elliptisch, vorn zugespitzt bis stachelspitzig. Die ledrigen und festen Blätter haben einen mehr oder weniger nach unten umgerollten Blattrand, der fein gezähnt ist. Die Blätter sind oberseits glänzend dunkelgrün und kahl. Junge Blätter sind unterseits gelblich, im Alter dann durch Schuppenhaare rostbraun. Daher kommen deutsche Artbezeichnungen wie "Rostblättrige Alpenrose" oder "Rostrote Alpenrose". Die Blätter verbleiben nur etwa zwei Jahre am Strauch.

Die zwittrigen etwa fünf bis acht Millimeter lang gestielten Blüten stehen zu mehreren in einer gedrängten, endständigen Traube. Die innen behaarte Krone ist breit-trichterförmig und tiefrosa bis kräftig rot. Sie wird bis 2 Zentimeter lang und ebenso breit. Die zehn Staubblätter überragen nicht die Krone und sind am Grund behaart.

Die Blütezeit ist von Mai bis Juli.

Die ab August reifenden bräunlichen Kapselfrüchte sind holzig und enthalten viele extrem leichte Samen, die vom Wind verbreitet werden.
